This weekend in Moscow's Manezh Exhibition Hall, designer Diane von Furstenberg is being feted for her colorful life and career. "Journey of Dress," an exhibition that was curated by her good friend André Leon Talley, spans 35 years and touches on everything from her first famed garment to disco days at Studio 54 to her current CFDA presidency.
In honor of the occasion, we caught with the designer to talk art, fashion, and her emotional connection to Russia.
StyleList: How did this exhibition come about?
Diane von Furstenberg: I have had two stores in Moscow for a while and I actually haven’t been over there to do PR and things like that. I knew this was going to happen in the fall. Over the summer I was with Natalia Vodianova and I said, ‘will you be there for me and come to Russia?’ She said, ‘Of course but what are you going to do?’ I said, ‘I’m going to do a fashion show and speak at the school of journalism.’ You know, the usual things that I do. And she told me, ‘But you know in Russia, people would love to know your history, your Warhols and Studio 54 and all of that.’ So this is how it all happened.
SL: What can people expect?
DVF: It’s going to be held in a huge state museum in Red Sqaure with all of the original art. It’s 6,000 square feet. Fashion divided by art. The dresses range from 1976 to 2007. Everything will be broken into four vignettes: Luxe, Studio 54, American Dream, and Empowerment, or Working Girl. So there will be all the fashion then artwork by Francesco Clemente, Andy Warhol…
SL: Where do keep your famous wrap dresses?
DVF: I have a huge archive in my house in Connecticut.
SL: Do you ever wear the original ones?
DVF: I personally, well you know, I’m 30 years older so…
SL: Will this become a traveling exhibition?
DVF: I think it will be. There has been interest in it from people in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Washington D.C. It all happened quite naturally, but I’ve never presented it in this way. My father was born in Russia back in 1929, so I’m doing this 80 years later. It’s very emotional.
Hair bows made headlines at the 2010 runways shows. See which designers made them a top trend.
Madonna called and said she wants her bows back. Extra large and extra colorful, bows at the Marc by Marc Jacobs show channeled the Material Girl during her early days.
The bows at Diane Von Furstenberg had a sexy innocence-part schoolgirl, part siren.
At the Jason Wu show, layered bows wrapped hair like a perfect present.
Models at Luella looked like modern-day Pebbles Flintstone, only with a bow instead of a bone.

Don’t be surprised if the next time you walk into your favorite store, you feel oddly compelled to buy fragrance.
A company called Prolitec is providing retailers, such as Bebe, with a discreet way to introduce shoppers to their perfume with something called “ambient scenting,” reports WWD.
According to WWD, Bebe uses an easy-to-hide, 5-inch cube that disperses the essence of the scent around visual displays to help introduce the fragrance.
This kind of innovative thinking may just be what the struggling fragrance industry needs to shake things up a bit. “I think we’re at a point with scent where music was 10 or 15 years ago,” Roger Bensinger, executive vice president of marketing at Prolitec told the paper.
“Now you wouldn’t think of going into a store without hearing music.”
While no hard data exists showing what sampling does for sales, the Scent Marketing Institute reports it can result in double-digit sales, according to the source.
Carb counters beware! Prolitec also provides grocery stores with the scent of a loaf of bread, reports WWD. (We’re hungry just thinking about it.)

It really pays to dress the First Family.
Especially for Jenna Lyons, Creative Director of J.Crew Group Inc, who oversaw the creation of the Obama daughters’ CrewCuts inaugural ensembles and that signature floral J.Crew cardigan Michelle Obama has worn on numerous occasions.
Lyons was rewarded with a one-time cash bonus of $1 on Oct. 27, an Oct. 29 filing with the SEC reveals. However, there are strings attached.
If she were to leave the company without “good reason,” as defined by her contract, before Oct. 27, 2011, she would have to return the whole bonus. If she left before Oct. 27, 2013, she’d have to return half of it.
Lyons is guiding J.Crew successfully through these economic rough times — earlier this week, the company said it expected sales and earnings for its third fiscal quarter to be up over earlier projections.
She’s also received recognition from her peers. Lyons was recently made a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
It looks like she’s earned that extra million!
